The Stewart tartans are royal tartans, and therefore can be worn by the public. The Royal Stewart tartan (above) was always regarded as the personal tartan of the Royal House of Scotland, and it is now considered to be the Royal tartan of Her Majesty The Queen.
James, 5th High Stewart, bravely supported Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in their struggle for Scottish independence. Walter, 6th High Stewart, married Princess Marjory, daughter of Robert the Bruce, and from them are descended the Royal House of Stewart.
